Endodontics
Relief from tooth sensitivity and pain.
Around 35 percent of the U.S. population experiences some degree of tooth sensitivity. Sensitive teeth typically produce discomfort in response to temperature, pressure, or sweetness of foods.
Tooth sensitivity occurs when dentin (the living tissue beneath enamel) transmits sensations to nerves in the tooth's inner core.
Tooth Anatomy
Dentin is a calcified tissue normally covered by enamel on the crown and cementum on roots. It contains tiny tubules that, when exposed, can cause sensitivity.
Gum recession exposes root surfaces and can result from genetic factors, periodontal disease, or vigorous brushing. Excessive dietary acids from sodas and sports drinks erode tooth surfaces. Brushing immediately after acidic beverages worsens erosion; waiting one hour allows saliva to neutralize acid.
Treatment Recommendations
- Gentle brushing with soft-bristled brushes
- Fluoride toothpaste to strengthen enamel
- Sensitive-teeth formulations with potassium (typically requiring 4-6 weeks for effectiveness)
- Professional treatments: concentrated fluoride varnishes, prescription mouthrinses, or bonded materials
