Common Dental Problems
Dental concerns by age and how we can help.
Dental concerns vary by life stage. Issues like tooth decay and dental injuries can occur at any age. Here's what to watch for.
Children
Tooth Decay
Tooth decay, caused by oral bacteria, remains the most prevalent chronic disease of childhood. Prevention includes good oral hygiene, a low-sugar diet, and regular dental checkups starting when the first baby tooth appears.
Dental Injuries
Sports-related dental injuries account for more than 600,000 emergency room visits each year. Custom-fitted mouthguards available at our office offer superior protection.
Orthodontic Problems
Evaluation is recommended around age 7 when a mix of baby and adult teeth is present. Orthodontists use special appliances to correct alignment issues before puberty.
Adults (Ages 25–64)
Cosmetic Concerns
Issues include crooked or stained teeth affecting career or personal life. Solutions include orthodontics, teeth whitening, veneers, crowns, and tooth replacement.
Sensitive Teeth
Caused by erosion of tooth enamel and/or gum recession exposing dentin. Triggers include cold or pressure stimuli.
Gum Disease
Affects nearly 50% of those over age 30. Symptoms include inflamed gums, bleeding during flossing or brushing, and loose teeth. Early treatment prevents tooth loss.
Seniors
Missing Teeth
Teeth are usually lost over the course of years. Dental implants are today's state-of-the-art method of replacement, while bridgework and dentures remain viable alternatives.
Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)
Often a side effect of both prescription and over-the-counter medications. Keep your dentist updated on all medications.
No matter what your age, it's important to get the dental treatment you need and to visit the dental office regularly for checkups, professional cleanings, and preventive services.
